Trampers become bush carpenters in this 1940s cinema reel. Hardy members of the Tararua Tramping Club carry heavy building materials uphill and through a river so they can build a hut at Totara Flats. Trampers hammer and axe away, while others prepare meals over a log fire. In nearby Wellington, Miss New Zealand Mary Wootton gets a rapturous welcome after returning from a five month world trip. Meanwhile in Rotorua Prime Minister Peter Fraser opens the Janet Fraser Memorial Guest House, which gives Māori a place to stay while visiting loved ones at nearby Rotorua Hospital.
I have had a wonderful trip, but I still think New Zealand is the best country to live in.– Miss New Zealand 1947 Mary Wootton, after spending five months abroad
