...it's hard not to feel a bit sad for the river. We've ransacked and plundered it from one end to the other. If the whole dam plan goes ahead, the Clutha will become nothing more than a series of ponds really. I'm glad I had the chance to make this journey before that happens, while the Clutha all the way down retains so much of its character.

The twisting gorge road that so impressed me as a child is now a wide highway. They're still digging here, to stabilise the last of the anclent landslips along the side of the gorge. With any luck this will be the final step before they create Lake Dunstan, behind the giant dam at Clyde.
