Jordyn Morgan's stage name 'Why' is both a joke about her name and a reference to her inspiration — celebrating her Māori and Pasifika identity. In 2019 Jordyn enrolled in a Māori immersion class as a gift to herself, her children and her father, who was separated from his whenua and language. Morgan describes her synth-washed bilingual duet 'Hey Love' as an "80's reclamation ballad"; it is a waiata about language recovery and healing intergenerational trauma. In this Waiata Anthems video, Morgan is joined by duet partner Mohi Allen on a rooftop set, to deliver their sweet tribute to hope and healing.
'Hey Love' gives words to the calling I could feel to reclaiming my reo Māori. It’s written from the perspective of our tūpuna and acknowledges the difficulties of reclaiming at the same time as offering hope.– Jordyn with a Why on her waiata 'Hey Love', Music Managers Forum Aotearoa, July 2023
