Quite what generates this flow of lunacy from Clarke's brain to his pen is hard to tell. I suspect that's one of those serious questions he didn't want asked.

I would think Fred Dagg could be described as being in life's great holding pattern. He's simply awaiting landing instructions, more or less permanently. He's always available. He's a very likeable character, and one that I enjoy doing, so whenever required I can wheel him out. And of course Fred Dagg manifests himself in practically everything I do.
